Understanding Who Benefits
|
Use and Misuse of the Self Having our Primary Control working well involves allowing the greatest lengthening of the spine possible. This lengthening is a prerequisite of good movement. We might be sitting, walking, playing our instrument, or singing. If we coordinate our head, neck and back to bring about the optimal lengthening of our spine, our movements will bring about improved performance. This optimal lengthening of the spine is what defines good use of the self. Misuse of the self occurs when we are unaware of our habits that interfere with the proper function of our Primary Control. An Alexander Technique Teacher can teach us how to stop interfering with our head, neck and back. As we stop this interference, we feel better, we move with ease, and the issues with our pain, performance, and stress can be resolved. -Annette Schmidt Annette is a Certified Alexander Technique Teacher and owner of Silver Fox Studio for the Alexander Technique in Walnut Creek.
