What will I learn in a lesson?

In a lesson, the teacher helps you to understand how your thinking and movement style is limiting you. You will be shown -- with words and touch - how you can approach your movement and thinking differently. Using a unique hands-on method to elicit your central coordination and power, the teacher will give you an experience of dynamic, integrated movement. With this expert guidance, you learn how to create that same dynamic, integrated movement on your own.

Will the Technique help my back problems or get rid of my overuse injury?

The Alexander Technique addresses the individual as a whole. If your problems are a result of habitual poor use of yourself, you will find that as your use improves and you learn to apply the principles of the Technique, the areas of pain or limitation will find a new balance and will be addressed as part of the process.

Can I learn the Technique on my own?

Habits are unconscious. It takes a highly trained teacher to help you perceive and change your ingrained patterns. With gentle, supportive touch, the Alexander Technique Teacher helps you notice areas of habit and tension, make positive changes, and experience yourself in a new way.

How long does it take? What does it cost?

Duration of study depends on your initial condition and personal goals. To enjoy the full benefits, a recommended course is 12 to 30 private lessons. It is highly recommended that students come for an initial lesson and then decide whether to commit to the recommended course of 12 lessons. Private lessons are 60 minutes. The initial lesson is lasts an hour and a half. Please call me and ask about the introductory special and pricing.  Give it a try!

I am very independent, and I like to solve my own problems. Please explain in more detail why can't I learn the Alexander Technique on my own?

People take lessons to learn to learn new habits or to change old habits that are at the root of poor performance, pain, and stress. You may encounter difficulty while trying to change habits on your own because of what Alexander Technique Teachers call faulty sensory awareness. Some of us have had poor posture, for example, for so long that it feels right to us. Therefore, our sensory awareness has become faulty. In order to change these faulty habits that feel right, we have to begin doing things that feel wrong. Trying to do something that feels wrong can be difficult without the sort of hands-on guidance that Alexander Technique Teachers provide for students

Each student's progress depends on how much they independently apply the skills they learn in the lessons.   Since an Alexander Technique lesson is not a treatment, your independence and problem solving ability will help you make more rapid progress.  True, you will be taking a lesson, so you are not making all of your discoveries on your own.  And yet, it is very much up to you how you will progress.
